Theatre Royal milestone cements 25 Martin Place as cultural CBD hub
- 08 August 2025
The iconic Theatre Royal Sydney, located at 25 Martin Place, has celebrated a major milestone, selling over one million tickets since reopening its doors four years ago in December 2021.
The 25 Martin Place precinct, co-owned by Dexus and Dexus Wholesale Property Fund, was redeveloped between 2019 – 2022, with internationally renowned architect Woods Bagot, and in consultation with Harry original architects Seidler and Associates. The expert teams worked together to future-proof the heritage listed 25 Martin Place (formerly known as the MLC Building) and celebrate its new identity as the heart and soul of the Sydney CBD with hatted restaurants and exclusive dining experiences, luxury fashion flagship stores and premium services and amenities. The redevelopment successfully preserved the building’s integrity and legacy for future generations to enjoy.
Harry Seidler’s original vision was to create a vibrant city within a city. From the outdoor plaza and best in class retail, to the sculpture courtyard, terraces and laneways, the precinct’s integrated spaces create a generous public space for visitors to socialise and connect. These spaces are in addition to the 67-floors of premium office space in the original tower, which was inspired by classic Bauhaus foundations and celebrates of the intersection of geometry with modern purpose.
With its strategic location in the heart of Sydney’s central business district (CBD), the theatre is positioned to host some of the world’s most iconic productions, from major musicals and plays to ballet and live music. It has been recognised as one of most important cultural institutions in the city, and crucial to world class productions launching in the Australian market. The historic theatre reopened its doors in 2021 following its two-year development, with the redesign including a new auditorium with new seating and staging. Its new two-tiered design means no seat within the auditorium is more than 23 metres from Theatre Royal’s stage, and its capacity has increased to seat 1,200 people.
