Atlassian Central in Sydney has reached its full structural height of more than 180 metres, marking a construction milestone known as ‘topping out’ and establishing Australia as home to the world's tallest hybrid timber tower. At 39 storeys, the landmark development stands approximately 100 metres taller than the previous record holder, Ascent tower in Milwaukee, USA, setting a new global benchmark for innovative construction.
The tower combines mass timber with steel and concrete through a hybrid structural system. This approach uses timber to drastically reduce overall building weight and carbon impact, while relying on steel and concrete for the strength and stability required for a building of this scale.
Atlassian Central's design reimagines the modern workplace, centred on a series of timber ‘habitats’ that bring together natural materials, light and ventilation within intentionally designed spaces for work and collaboration. The project is targeting a 50 per cent reduction in upfront embodied carbon across its structure compared with a conventional premium commercial office tower, together with a 50 per cent improvement in operational energy efficiency compared with a conventional 5 Star NABERS base building.
Delivering a project of this scale has required a level of precision and sequencing that is the first of its kind in Australia. Dexus, as developer and co-owner with Atlassian, appointed Australian-owned contractor Built, in joint venture with Obayashi Corporation, to lead construction, bringing together timber, steel and concrete elements through a highly intricate build program.
With the structural frame now complete, work continues on the façade installation and central building services, with the development on track for practical completion by the end of 2026.
Dexus Group CEO & Managing Director Ross Du Vernet said the topping out reflects a project defined by long-term thinking and a willingness to challenge convention.
