Description

DA approval has been granted for the redevelopment of Willows Shoppingtown, resulting in the addition of approximately 13,000square metres, taking the centre’s size to 38,000square metresupon completion.  The $70 million development will expand the centre to the north and include a new Big W discount department store of 8,500square metres, two mini majors, about 50 new specialty stores, 600 additional car spaces and upgraded amenities.

The existing centre comprises Woolworths and Coles supermarkets, Target and approximately 80 specialty stores.

This redevelopment represents the first stage of development planned for the Willows site which has the potential to develop to around 72,000 square metres of retail over the next 20 years. It is predicted that 69 percent of the regions future population growth will occur in the west of the region which Willows primarily serves.

Sustainability features:

The development design incorporates designated pedestrian corridors, disabled access, bike storage, shower facilities and transport links to provide easy access for visitors and employees. Particular attention has also been given to the centre’s relationship with its surrounding urban environment with a focus on creating attractive streetscapes and reducing impacts such as noise. It will enhance the Greening Townsville program with landscaped areas for community enjoyment. As the detailed design progresses, we will be working collaboratively with the Local Government to ensure sustainable solutions are integrated at all stages of the development, particularly in the areas of water, energy and waste which will enhance Townsville’s value as a place to live and visit.
